A Namelix alternative that screens the name, not just the domain
Namelix is a fast, free generator that checks domains across many extensions. What it does not do is tell you whether somebody already owns the name. Here is the honest comparison.
Namelix is good, and any comparison that opens by pretending otherwise is not worth reading. It generates genuinely brandable short names, it is free, it is fast, and it learns from the names you save so the suggestions improve as you use it. If you want thirty decent candidates in ninety seconds, it is a reasonable place to start and plenty of founders have named real companies with it.
This page is about the gap between a shortlist and a decision.
What Namelix checks
Namelix checks domain availability, and it checks more than the .com. Its own settings let you prioritise a specific extension, and its results cover the extensions founders actually use. A widely repeated claim that the free generators "only check .com" is wrong, and we are not going to repeat it.
What Namelix does not do is check whether the name is already owned as a brand. It does not search the trademark register, and it does not search the live web for companies already trading under the name. Three separate sources agree on the trademark point, including a 2026 roundup of nine free generators that found only one checking trademarks inside the workflow at all. Namelix will return a name that is a registered mark in your industry, with an available domain beside it, and nothing on the screen will suggest a problem.
That is not a bug in Namelix. It is a different product doing a different job.
The two questions, and which tool answers them
There are two questions to answer before you commit to a name.
Can I have the domain? Registrars answer this in milliseconds, and every generator answers it. It is worth very little on its own, because with more than two thousand extensions in circulation something is always available.
Does somebody already own this name as a brand? This is decided by trademark law and by use in commerce, not by the domain registry. It is the question that produces a demand letter at month fourteen, and it is the one no domain check can see.
Namelix answers the first. BetterNamer answers both.

The trademark screening is the part worth being specific about, because "checks trademarks" can mean almost nothing. BetterNamer searches the USPTO register for the name and for names that sound like it, then shows each match with its status (live, pending, abandoned or cancelled), the international class it covers, and the owner, and grades the whole result as no conflict, low, medium or high. A live mark for a similar name in your class is a stop sign. A dead mark, or a live mark in an unrelated class, is context rather than a verdict. That distinction is the entire value, and it is the reason a link out to the USPTO search box is not the same feature.
The web search matters for a reason founders underestimate: most small businesses never register a trademark, and they still hold rights in the area where they trade. BetterNamer searches the exact name as a quoted phrase, because an unquoted search for a coined name gets reinterpreted as the nearest common word and returns nothing useful, and it grades a hit in a page title or a hostname differently from a passing mention.
Where Namelix is the better choice
If you want a free, fast brainstorm and you intend to run clearance yourself or through an attorney, Namelix is a good tool and costs nothing. If you are naming a side project that may never trade, the screening BetterNamer adds is effort you do not need yet.
BetterNamer is the better fit when the name is going on something expensive: packaging, a storefront, a product line, a company you intend to keep. The free tier gives you five searches a day with generation and domain checks; the trademark and web screening are what the paid tier adds, because they are the part that keeps the name.
Checked, and dated
Everything above about Namelix was checked on 22 August 2026 against their own site and two independent reviews. Products change, and a competitor comparison that is not dated is not worth trusting. If you are reading this much later, check their current feature list before taking our word for it, and tell us if we are out of date.
